Authenticity, Branding, and Community: How the Industry’s Favourite Buzzwords Are Keeping Artists Broke and Burnt Out
If you’ve spent any time navigating the music industry, you’ve heard these words: “authenticity”, “branding”, and “community”. On the surface, they sound like the golden keys to success. And if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that these overused buzzwords are often the very reason artists are stuck, struggling, and still questioning their existence...
Lemme break it down…
These terms, as they’re used by labels and traditional artist development programs, do more harm than good—
And I have good news! MusicFit is flipping the script to create sustainable, fulfilling careers for artists.
1. Authenticity: The Industry’s Favourite Lie
The word *authenticity* is thrown around like confetti at every industry panel, seminar, and Instagram bio. Labels demand it, managers market it, and artists are expected to live and breathe it. Here’s the catch: when the industry talks about “authenticity”, they fail to define what the means. Real talk: It’s anything aside from your *real* self. They mean a marketable version of yourself that fits their narrative.
The result? Artists contort themselves into something they think will get the likes, subscribes and streams, sacrificing their mental health and creative spark to meet expectations. Instead of feeling free, they’re boxed in.
MusicFit’s Approach: Stop selling “authenticity” as a marketing tactic.
We help artists *live* it. By aligning their creative vision with their values and wellness, we empower artists to show up as their truest selves onstage and backstage—without compromise.
2. Branding: The Cookie-Cutter Trap
“Your brand is everything.” Sound familiar? While branding is important, the way it’s sold in the music industry is a trap. Artists are expected to fit into pre-made archetypes (the edgy rocker, the sad songwriter, the hype rapper) and build their careers around trends instead of their actual identity.
This cookie-cutter approach strips away individuality and leaves artists chasing an image that feels hollow—and worse, forgettable.
MusicFit’s Approach: We prioritize *purpose over polish*.
At MusicFit, branding is less about fitting into a mold; it’s more about building a career that feels authentic and deeply connected to who you are. It’s less about the perfect logo or Instagram aesthetic—it’s more about crafting a message that moves people and builds lasting relationships.
We even crafted our own archetypes to help our artists understand all of the moving parts of how to navigate both their on-stage efforts and the shit that goes on behind the scenes.
3. Community: Building for Show, Not Connection

Community is the new buzzword everyone loves to throw around. Far too often it’s just another industry tactic to boost numbers. Labels push the idea of “building community” to pad fan counts on social media or fill Discord channels with faceless followers. The focus is on quantity, not quality.*
*We’ve also experienced the narcissistic machine first hand… most recently right here in our own backyard, Calgary… guised as “community builders” out there talking shit about building community and then stonewalling, gaslighting and leaving those who happen to fall outside of their utopian vision, out of said community. That kind of conditional love shit is what’s actually hurting the scene… #IYKYK
The result? Artists end up with shallow, transactional interactions rather than meaningful, supportive relationships. A “community” built on vanity metrics and popularity leaves artists feeling isolated and undervalued. You’re only worth something if they can make a buck… 🖕 f*ck that.
MusicFit’s Approach: We believe in true belonging over hollow metrics.
At MusicFit, we teach artists how to create genuine communities based on shared values, trust, and connection. It’s less about building a crowd—it’s more about cultivating a space where artists and fans feel seen, heard, and inspired. Furthermore, it’s the simple “Unconditional Love” approach that helps artists learn without fear of judgment or banishment if and when they oppose tyranny, they choose to rebel.
The MusicFit Solution: Sustainable Careers, From the Inside Out
The truth is, these buzzwords—authenticity, branding, and community—are inherently good. The problem lies in how the industry weaponizes them to keep artists chasing the next big thing, instead of building careers that last.
At MusicFit, we take a different approach. We focus on the *artist as a whole person*—their mindset, wellness, performance, and purpose. By dismantling the industry’s toxic trends and replacing them with tools for empowerment, we’re creating a new generation of artists who thrive on and off the stage.
