Breaking Free: Labels Lead to Limitations
Week 1 of 12 — The Artist Awakening Series
Let’s start with a truth most artists already feel in their gut:
You’ve been put in a box.
Maybe they called you:
“Local artist”
“Up-and-coming”
“Indie”
“Unsigned”
“Just a hobbyist”
Maybe it was more subtle.
Maybe it came from the industry, from your friends, your family…
Or maybe worst of all, it came from you.
Whatever the label was, one thing’s for sure:
Every time you accept it, you accept a ceiling.
The Problem with Labels
Labels are supposed to help us understand something.
But in the world of artistry, they’ve become shortcuts for assumptions.
“Indie” = Not professional
“Unsigned” = Waiting to be picked
“Local” = Not big enough to matter
We don’t just wear these labels. We internalize them.
And they start to shape how we move, think, speak, and act.
If you’ve ever said something like:
“I’m just trying to get my name out there…”
“I’m hoping to catch a break…”
“I’m not a pro yet, but I’m working on it…”
You’ve already accepted the label.
You’ve already lowered your power.
Artists Don’t Need Labels. They Need A League And A Legacy.
Think about your favourite legendary artist.
Prince. Bowie. Kendrick. Janis. Beyoncé.
Did any of them wait for a label to define them?
No. They created the category.
They made the world bend around their identity—not the other way around.
That’s not just branding.
That’s a mindset.
The Shift You Need to Make
Here’s what I want you to do this week:
Write down every label you've been given as an artist.
– “Too niche.”
– “Too experimental.”
– “Too soft.”
– “Too loud.”
– “Not serious enough.”
– “Too intense.”Then write the word ‘but’ after each of them and finish the sentence.
That’s how you identify the little bastard we call the “Heckler” inside the MusicFit camp. And they’re the ones who are responsible for you playing into that label.
See them. Hear them. And carry on anyway...
Do what you need to do despite the label. Now you’ve written your own identity.
You’ve started the process of learning who you really can be…
Not who they said you were.
Not what the industry categorized you as.
Better yet, who are you becoming?
Final Thoughts…
You are not here to fit into a genre.
You’re not here to be another cog in the machine.
You’re here to shift culture.
But first—
You have to break free from the labels.
Next week, we go deeper.
We’re tackling the biggest myth in the game:
👉 “Just focus on the art and success will follow.”
(Spoiler: That’s how the industry keeps you broke.)
Want to Go Deeper?
We’ve got a private underground community on Skool where this series comes to life.
If you’re ready to actually DO something with these ideas— Workshops, discussions, local meetups, and industry rebellion all happen there… plus we’re hiring… it might just be the job you’ve been waiting for…
🎟 Join us → The MusicFit Underground
Until next week,
Keep creating.
Keep evolving.
And stop playing small.
