Failure to Launch
The ongoing dilemma of having too many good ideas...
So I’m sitting on Air Canada 0036 somewhere over the Pacific right now…
and I got to thinking… I’ve been doing this all wrong. 😞
TLDR; Tell me what kind of content you’re into so I can redo this space with value.
Okay. You’re going to read this post and think… “dude, again? or “what a hypocrite.” You’re going to think I’m unable to finish anything I start.
And honestly, all that might even be true.
I must admit, I’m a chronic firestarter, and it’s very easy for me to let go of projects that feel misaligned. That was the case last month, and I’m coming clean with a new approach, but I really need your help for it to be successful. I need to know what you are most interested in.
See, I realize I’ve been going about things wrong. I’m trying to serve an audience with stuff that I want. Not what’s necessarily in-demand or even valued.
If you were here 6 weeks ago, you read my post about a planned 12-week series all about musician business strategy. The things musicians need, the common problems and all that. And as much as I wanna believe I serve the music community, I’ve slowly been realizing a few things about that audience and my relation to it.
There are a ton of experts who are a much better source of information and inspiration than I am for the conventional artist. They don’t wanna hear about how a successful business takes time, a commitment to one’s health and the willingness to invest in oneself.
Many conventional artists who say they want help have yet to experience enough pain to actually make changes. In short, they’re addicted to the identity of being a “starving artist”. I’m unable to help someone who refuses help.
I’ve seen my greatest success in music when I’m creating my own breed of rockstar. By partnering with non-traditional artists — literally people who would never call themselves a musician, a creative or an artist I’ve been able to set a creative fire inside coaches, educators, athletes, healers… and help to extract their ideas in a whole new way. Maybe it was a podcast, maybe an album, meditation recording, or a whole business even. I learned I’m my best when I’m helping unleash the rockstar from within those who had that part of them silenced for however long.
I’m an ideas guy. I see things differently and love helping others do the same.
I like being fluid in how I get there. “You’re flowy”, says one client of mine. It’s all creativity, but I primarily get myself out of trouble with music, movement or mindset techniques. The act of creating something has always been a source of joy in my life, whether it was a new drill in hockey, a new song in the studio, or a new way of looking at a tricky situation, for example, turning an obstacle into an opportunity… I have always had a knack for helping people see things they never even dreamed of.
So when I started writing about things that were important to only me and a very select few… it showed. Lesson learned: audience-centric content here on in.
This is the part where you come in…
I’d like to invite you to go to the top of this post where you’ll see a poll asking you to share what you want. When I know what you want to know from me, I can create more valuable stuff.
And… if there’s something I missed, please shoot me a note or drop a comment on this post.
My aim is to help purpose-driven leaders, educators, and wellness pros unlock the creativity they’ve secretly been craving to express. If you fall outside those roles, but still have a creative project you wanna take on, please reach out. I’d love to hear what you’re thinking.
Whether it’s music, storytelling, performance, or wild new offers, I help you own your artistic soul—even if you’ve been hiding it behind spreadsheets, science, or service.
If you know someone who’s been hiding their creative genius, please share this with them.
Let’s make creativity cool again.
Thanks for being here,
Mike
-PS. Speaking about embarking on new creative ventures in a timely fashion, I released a new EP called Full Moon III, honouring three versions of the tune (plus the original demo as a bonus track 🤭 ) to help meet listeners where they are. Included is a re-imagined version I made in Australia last Saturday on my 5th anniversary of waking up and deciding to choose my own path in life… it was powerful and beautiful and wrecked my heart and soul all at the same time to create it.
